In 1979, the classic Atari game Asteroids hit the arcades. It was simple yet addictive—and at one point, it was estimated to be making over 10 million dollars a week. I definitely contributed my fair share of quarters to the cause back in the day.
You can still occasionally find the game in a retro arcade or bowling alley. The last one I played was at the Pinball Museum in Las Vegas—still just a quarter to play. In honor of the game, I’ve taken it upon myself to recreate Asteroids as closely as possible. That meant dusting off my programming skills (or lack thereof) and making the most of modern AI.
The project is currently about 80% complete. Using original documents and drawings, I’ve done my best to recreate the graphics and gameplay. The original used vector graphics, which gave it that unmistakable look.
